FDA Warns Seller of Reishi, Joint Supplements, Ginseng & More for Pesticides, Other Violations

On March 12, 2019, the FDA issued a warning letter to Yanqing "Michael" Li and Chang Su, owners of the website http://www.woohoonatural.com/, following a review which found certain statements made about the company's products, such as WOHO Premium Select American Ginseng, Reishi King Triple Mushroom, ProstaRX-9, Joint Flex, Pure American Ginseng Capsules and Extra Strength Lecithin to be drug claims.

For example, the company's Reishi King Triple Mushroom capsules were promoted with statements such as " Some of the health benefits of Red Reishi include lowering of high blood pressure, improvement of kidney functions"

(See ConsumerLab.com's answer to the question, Do reishi mushroom supplements boost the immune system, or have other benefits?)

ProstaRX-9 was promoted with statements such as "It (saw palmetto extract, an ingredient in this product) has been used in traditional, eclectic, and alternative medicine for a variety of indications, most notably benign prostatic hyperplasia."

(See ConsumerLab.com's Review of Prostate Supplements for tests of related products).

Joint Flex was promoted with statements such as "The inability for some of us to produce glucosamine or the reduced production generally associated with age may be a leading factor in the development of osteoarthritis. Studies have shown that patients who take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) felt better initially, but after three to six weeks, the group on glucosamine sulfate felt better," and "Boswellia has been discovered that this herb contains certain substances called boswellic acids, which are known to have anti-inflammatory properties; therefore, Boswellia is often suggested as a treatment for bursitis, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis. Research shows that this herb may also protect cartilage from damage."

(See ConsumerLab.com's Joint Health Supplements Review for tests of related products).

In addition, FDA analysis following a facility inspection found that a food product sold by the company, Hsu's Root to Health sliced American Ginseng, exceeded established tolerances for pesticides and/or contained pesticides for which there are no established tolerances.

The company is required to notify the FDA in writing of the specific steps taken to correct the violations within fifteen working days of receipt of the warning letter.
